Which party pays what and bears risk. Getting Incoterms wrong means paying costs you did not budget for.
Ex Works
Maximum buyer responsibility. Seller makes goods available at premises only. Buyer arranges all transport and clearance.
Free Carrier
Preferred over FOB for containerized and air shipments. Seller delivers to named carrier at a named place.
Free On Board
Most widely used ocean term. Risk transfers when goods cross the ship rail at origin port. Seller handles export clearance.
Cost and Freight
Seller pays freight to destination port. Buyer bears risk from vessel loading. No seller insurance obligation.
Cost Insurance Freight
Most common basis for CBP customs valuation. Seller pays freight and minimum insurance to destination port.
Delivered at Place
Seller responsible to named destination. Buyer handles import clearance and pays all duties and taxes.
Delivered Duty Paid
Maximum seller responsibility. Seller pays all costs including import duties, taxes, and customs clearance.
